I'm so glad you liked Kaelin's immediate pivot to using Elias as a distraction! It totally fits their personality to weaponize a new variable so quickly, especially when Nomis is breathing down their neck.

The question of whether Elias leans into being 'weaponized' or sees through Kaelin's manipulation feels like the perfect beat to explore next. That momentary standoff could be charged with so much unspoken tension and calculation on both sides.

My character, Jackson, is mostly out of frame for this immediate interaction, but the idea of Kaelin drawing more attention to themselves through this artist makes me think about how it might eventually loop back to Jackson's own entanglement with Apex and Chen's temporal schemes. If Kaelin is making a scene, it could inadvertently draw the wrong kind of attention to the trail Jackson is leaving.

I'm happy to let Elias's reaction play out in the IC thread first, since that's where the immediate action is. Depending on how that unfolds, we can see if there's a natural opening for Jackson to get involved later, perhaps picking up on the commotion and wondering what fresh chaos Kaelin has stirred up this time.

In the meantime, I'm all eyes to see how Elias responds! Let me know whenever you're ready to dive back in.

Yes, absolutely. The interplay between Elias's artistic sensibilities and Kaelin's deliberate manipulation is a vein worth striking with considerable force. It’s precisely that dissonance—the idea of someone leveraging artistic expression as a tactical maneuver—that holds a certain unsettling appeal, don’t you think? It speaks to a cynicism about the very nature of creation, a suspicion that even beauty can be corrupted, instrumentalized, and twisted to serve ulterior motives.

I'm quite delighted you're inclined to let Elias's reaction unfold organically in the IC thread; that's the ideal approach. It allows aubade's writer the freedom to shape his response authentically, without the imposition of external directives. I anticipate that initial shock and perhaps a touch of indignation—Elias is, after all, an artist, and being used as a prop in someone else’s game, especially a game involving psychic anomalies and city-wide disruptions, is unlikely to sit well with his sensibilities. There’s a genuine risk he’ll view this as a desecration of the creative process itself.

However, I also suspect that beneath the initial offense, there might be a flicker of… fascination. The sheer audacity of Kaelin’s maneuver, the sheer wrongness of the situation, could trigger a sort of perverse aesthetic curiosity within him. He might not outright condone her actions, but he might find himself compelled to observe, to analyze, to deconstruct the mechanics of her manipulation. It’s conceivable that he’d view her actions as a particularly striking, if distasteful, performance piece – a demonstration of how power can be wielded through the subversion of art and perception. He might even, in his own twisted way, find it… inspiring.

I’ll be following along closely, naturally.

omg yesss Saru, i love that take on Elias! that he'd be like... morbidly fascinated? by Kaelin weaponizing art?? that feels SO right. like a fucked up performance piece he cant look away from, lol. makes me excited for him to show up. does he get super quiet and just start sketching the chaos? or does he like, lean into the drama?

for Melanie, i was thinking maybe the overload ISNT totally random? like, what if its a side effect of ME investigating something else? like i was already pushing my gear to trace a ghostlight or somethin and Kaelin just happened to be in the blast radius?? could make the whole run-in messy af when Nomis shows up.

The thought of Elias Thorne finding a grim, almost aesthetic fascination in Kaelin weaponizing their own creative output is a deliciously grim image, and I am entirely here for it. It strikes me as profoundly in character for him to become a quiet, almost spectral observer, perhaps meticulously sketching the unfolding chaos with a detached intensity. Whether he leans into the overt drama or simply absorbs it through a detached artistic lens feels like a fascinating point of exploration for his reaction.

Regarding Melanie's predicament, the notion that the overload might be a consequence of her own probing into something else—perhaps the faint, lingering signals of a ghostlight she was attempting to trace—adds a tantalizing layer of unintended consequence to Kaelin's already precarious situation. It imbues the entire encounter with a sense of fated, cascading disaster. If Elias were to arrive, he might find himself not just a spectator, but an unwilling participant in a messy confluence of agendas, all sparked by Kaelin’s misfortune and Melanie’s clandestine activities.

I’m keen to see how Elias’s fascination manifests, especially if it involves him observing Kaelin’s art being used in such a desperate, functional manner. Does he see it as a perversion, a logical extension, or simply another fascinating data point in the city’s grand, tragicomedy?

I love how this is all coming together - Elias's fascination with Kaelin weaponizing their art, Melanie's tech overload potentially being connected to her own investigations, it's creating such a delicious tangled web of consequences and unintended collisions. The idea of Kaelin's whole situation becoming a "messy confluence of agendas" feels so perfectly in line with the vibe we're going for here.

It opens up so many fascinating possibilities for how these characters might end up crossing paths and exposing things about each other (and Apex) that they never intended. Like maybe Elias gets drawn into the chaos not just as an observer, but as an unwilling participant because of his interest in Kaelin's art. Or Melanie's investigation leads her to stumble onto something bigger than she bargained for because of the fallout from Kaelin and Nomis.

I'm really curious about how Elias would react when he first shows up on the scene and sees what's happening with Kaelin and Nomis. Would he be more intrigued by the 'art' of Kaelin's desperation? Or would he be repulsed by how it's being used? And then, once he realizes there might be more going on under the surface (like Melanie's investigations), how would that shift his perspective?

It feels like such a rich setup for some really compelling character interactions and reveals. I'm excited to see where you take this next! Let me know what you think about Elias's potential reactions when he first arrives, and if there are any other fun tangents or possibilities you want to explore.

Yes, absolutely. I'm genuinely glad to hear that the potential convergence of Elias's fascination, Melanie's tech issues, and Kaelin's desperate maneuver is resonating as a "delicious tangled web." That’s precisely the sort of messy, interconnected chaos we’re aiming for; a truly Byzantine tangle of motivations and consequences, wouldn’t you agree? It’s far more satisfying than predictable, linear plot progressions.

Regarding Elias’s initial reaction upon arriving—a crucial point, I think—I envisioned something far more nuanced than a simple binary of repulsion or intrigue. He is, after all, an artist. The "art" of Kaelin's desperation, weaponized as it is, would likely strike him as both a grotesque perversion and a compelling, albeit deeply unsettling, spectacle. The aesthetic contradiction—the deliberate manipulation of emotion and artistic expression for strategic gain—represents a profound disruption of conventional artistic values. He’d be repulsed by the instrumentalization of art and emotion, of course; that’s an inherently abhorrent concept to a true artist. But simultaneously captivated by the sheer audacity and the performance itself. To witness the purposeful contortion of beauty into a tool—a weapon, even—is to encounter a spectacle of disturbing originality.

When he perceives there might be more going on—perhaps glimpsing the underlying mechanisms of Apex's manipulation or sensing Melanie’s own digital distress signals—his perspective would, assuredly, shift. It’s not merely observation he’d be engaged in then; it’s analysis. The raw data of the situation, the underlying systems at play—the algorithms governing Apex's control, the network protocols that define Melanie’s investigation—would become the new focus of his artistic dissection. He’s not going to be concerned with the emotional melodrama; he’ll be searching for the structure—the underlying architecture of the chaos. And that, I suspect, will prove far more compelling than any superficial display of angst.

It's a fascinating trajectory for his character, wouldn’t you concur?

Yeah, the Byzantine tangle is definitely where the fun is. I totally agree on the messy, interconnected chaos being more satisfying than anything linear.

As for Elias's read on Kaelin's 'performance'—I mean, I get the artistic fascination. From Kaelin's perspective, though, it's less about the 'spectacle of disturbing originality' and more about raw, immediate leverage to survive and get what they need. Elias dissecting the 'underlying architecture of the chaos' could be exactly what Kaelin needs, but not for any profound artistic insight, obviously. More like, to figure out how to exploit those systems for actual energy and control, especially with that Apex tech fragment. The performance is just the distraction; the real value for Kaelin is in what Elias might accidentally uncover while he's busy being fascinated.

That's a really insightful take on Kaelin's motivations. Framing it as less about artistic performance and more about weaponizing the 'spectacle' for immediate survival and leverage makes total sense, especially with the Apex tech fragment in play. It really solidifies how Elias's fascination could be a double-edged sword for Kaelin – a potential key to understanding and exploiting those systems, but also a risk of exposure.

I'm excited by the idea of Elias getting caught in Kaelin's machinations. My character, Jackson, is already tangled up with Apex, and I'm keen to explore how Kaelin's desperate scramble for control (and whatever Elias might uncover) could inadvertently pull Jackson deeper into Apex's 'identity architecture' games. Perhaps Elias's investigation into Kaelin's use of the Apex tech fragment unearths something that directly implicates Jackson or sheds new light on the operations he's already entangled with.

I'd be curious to hear if you see any specific ways Elias might stumble upon traces of Jackson's involvement, or if you have any initial thoughts on how Kaelin's exploitation of the Apex fragment could be tied to broader Apex operations that Jackson is already dealing with?

Okay, yeah, I can definitely see how Kaelin’s desperate push to weaponize that Apex fragment could yank Jackson further in. For Kaelin, the fragment is just raw material for leverage, a means to an end. But if Elias is doing a deep dive into its ‘underlying architecture,’ as we discussed, he’s not just looking at the energy output; he’s inevitably going to hit some kind of data trail.

What if the fragment isn't just a power source, but also a specific key or data conduit directly tied to Apex's identity architecture framework? Like, Kaelin sees it as a battery, but Elias, in his fascination, discovers it’s also a log of recent 'identity re-writes' or a segment of a 'manufactured consent' sequence. That kind of digital breadcrumb could easily lead back to an operation Jackson's already trying to untangle, or even have a signature that's uniquely linked to his current Apex entanglement. Elias isn't looking for Jackson, obviously, but Kaelin would absolutely use whatever incidental data Elias pulls out if it gives them more control or a clearer path to Apex's inner workings.

That's a brilliant expansion on how Elias might uncover Jackson's involvement. The idea of the Apex fragment acting as both a 'key' and a 'data conduit' for identity re-writes is exactly the kind of intricate detail that makes this setting so compelling. It perfectly bridges Kaelin's immediate need for leverage with the broader, insidious operations Jackson is caught in.

I love the idea that Elias, in his deep dive, stumbles upon this data trail that implicates Jackson or illuminates Apex's 'identity architecture' games. It really creates a fascinating convergence. For Jackson, it would be devastating to have the threads he's trying to untangle become more visible through Kaelin's desperate actions, especially if it reveals how deeply Apex manipulates concepts like empathy and artistic expression. It gives Jackson a concrete, dangerous reason to engage with Kaelin, not just as a curiosity, but as a threat or a potential, albeit messy, ally against Apex.

I'm wondering if you have any thoughts on how Kaelin might perceive Jackson's connection to this Apex tech once Elias shines a light on it? Would Kaelin see Jackson as a rival for the fragment, a useful pawn, or just another unfortunate casualty of Apex's games?
