Kaelin stood near the back of the Bodega Deluxe, a place that technically wasn't a deluxe version of anything but certainly sold more than just groceries out of the back alley. They were waiting for their self-heating ramen pack to finish its cycle, or at least, attempt to. The small, integrated screen on the warming unit flickered, the calorie count for the 'nutrient paste' it contained cycling through what looked like every known data error since the dawn of the internet. A high-pitched whine emanated from the unit, not its usual low hum, and the steam that finally puffed out smelled faintly of ozone and regret.
"Another borough curse," Kaelin muttered, leaning against a display of bootleg empathy patches. They watched as the screen finally settled on a randomized binary code before freezing completely. The ramen pack remained stubbornly cold. "Or maybe just another cheap rig that can't handle a little ad-rot."
