The chill in the air bit deeper than the damp as Jackson pulled his coat tighter around himself, moving away from the alley with a gait that betrayed nothing of the thoughts churning beneath the surface. Thorne. Always fucking Thorne.
He'd seen it play out too many times now - the man was a puppeteer, an endless supply of strings to manipulate and control. And Glitch-Witch had been just another dance, absorbed in their own game without seeing the larger board. A pawn, no more than a means to an end that Thorne held tightly in his grasp.
But pawns could be moved. Redirected. Or even sacrificed, if it served a greater purpose. The thought settled cold and sharp in Jackson's mind as he navigated the twisting sub-levels, the dim glow of flickering neon signs casting shifting shadows across the worn concrete.
This wasn't over. Not by a long shot. Thorne had a habit of collecting debts, and Jackson had just incurred one that would need to be paid. But first, he'd have to find out what Thorne was truly after - and more importantly, how to use it against him.
The pieces were moving on the board, but this time, Jackson would be the one pulling the strings. He just needed to figure out where those strings led... and who else might be caught in their tangled web.
